DETACHED RETINA IN DOGS The detached retina in dogs is a situation in a dog's eye whereby the retina of the dog detaches from the epithelium, and choroid and the two outermost layers of tissues in a dog's eye.- That is, it is the separation of the retina of the dog's eye from the back of the eyeball. This condition is usually a sign of a more serious illness. Retinal Detachment in dogs can occur in either one or both eyes and can occur at any age in a dog`s life. What Causes Detachment of Retina in Dogs? There are lots of factors responsible for the occurrence of a detached retina in dogs some of the prevalent and primary factors are listed below: Severe birth defects to the eye Hereditary eye defects High blood pressure Irritation of the eye Glaucoma Injury to the eye/ Inflammation of the eye Cancerous tumors Breeds at Risk of Developing Detachment of Retina Although the report of retinal detachment has been seen in all breeds, the following breeds are more prone to this condition. They are; English Springer Spaniel Bedlington Terrier American Cocker Spaniel Miniature Schnauzer Samoyed Labrador Retriever Border Collies Shih Tzu Symptoms of a Retinal Detachment in Dogs Vision loss/blindness in the infected eye - This can either occur slowly or quickly. If the detached retina is as a result of infection, loss vision, or blindness can occur in one to five days. If it is as a result of genetic defects or some chronic health tissue, then the blindness can occur slowly. Diagnosing Detached Retina in Dogs This will require quite a long process as a complete medical history of the dogs will be required, and also physical examination to determine the cause of the detached retina in dogs.
