Various pharmaceutical companies are into the production of drugs for preventing the development of heartworm diseases.

These may drug been approved by the FDA. Over the years, these drugs have gone a long way in preventing the development of heartworm.

They function by putting a check on the production cycle of heartworm larvae.

There are quite several preventive measures against the development of heartworm disease.

Some of them are;

Regular Check-ups: It is a lot easier to treat heartworm disease when it gets diagnosed on time.

It takes the larva months to get mature.

This means a dog can survive if diagnosed with heartworm so long as this diagnosis is made on time.

To help your dog beat this disease, you should take it for a check-up once in six-months

Mosquito Repellents: The function of this is relatively straight-forward. It is used to stop mosquito bites from occurring.

This is important as mosquitoes play a major role in moving this disease from one dog to another.

Mosquito repellents keep mosquitoes away from dogs because of their strong odor.

How to Treat Heartworms

There are various ways heartworms can be treated to achieve the same result.

Some of these ways are;

Drug Injections

One trendy way of treating heartworms in French bulldogs is through the use of drug injections.

In this method, a drug is injected into the bloodstream of the dog to kill heartworms.

This method of treatment is effective when done regularly.

When this injection is done for the first time, the dog will need 4 to 6 weeks to recover fully.

Sometimes the recovery period is longer.

While the dog is in its recovery period, the dog is given preventives regularly.

This leads to the prevention of microfilaria being formed.

This injection is good enough in some drugs. Certain French bulldogs, however, need extra drugs and antibiotics for heartworms to be kept away.

Six months after the initial heartworm treatment, the dog goes through a test to determine if it is still in a dangerous place. If heartworms still exist in the dog’s body, the treatment is started afresh.

Arsenic-Based Drugs

This treatment involves giving your French bulldog an arsenic-based medicine.

This method of treatment is effective. It, however, is associated with inflammation.

This inflammation occurs because of respiratory failure.

When dogs develop a side effect from this treatment, it is usually difficult for them to survive.

This is one reason you should prevent the disease instead of treating it.

Surgery

In situations in which the heartworm spreads in a French bulldog, the best way of treating the dog is to go through a surgical procedure.

Conclusion

Although heartworm can affect cats and ferrets, dogs are more affected by this parasite.

This disease operates just like cancer and gradually spreads around the body of the dog.

Heartworms are lethal and might lead to the death of a dog.
